One day...

I sometimes dream that one day my office will look like this:

Instead of this:

Tee hee - happy Friday everyone!

Dot's Giggle Spot #9

Okay, so I wasn't going to publish this post until tomorrow but I just can't wait! It isn't as much to do with writing as it is to do with acknowledging and celebrating all of the Mums out there who will celebrate Mothers Day this coming Sunday.

Sure we may be required to eat cold, over buttered toast and drink strange coffee brews early this Sunday morning, but if we're really lucky we might also receive something like this:

by iamacrazyturtle

Nothing beats the home made gifts you receive from your kids, but this just takes it to a whole new level of wonderful. The Hatchlings are a bit young to get rappin' just yet - maybe next year!

Happy Mothers Day everyone!!

Dot's Giggle Spot #8

I don't know where Dot gets her material, really I don't. Almost every church around the place seems to have a sign like this. You know the ones, they are updated periodically with messages about church functions, quotes from the bible, etc. etc.

The following exemplifies the power of writing succinctly:

I dont know about you, but I can hear the tone of voice that goes with this message instantly.

Another great giggle, thanks Dot!

Dot's Giggle Spot #6

Oh dear...

Had the author of this headline stepped away from his work for an hour (or ideally 24 hours), he probably would have noticed that something was up.

Perhaps time was too precious, or perhaps he was so glad to have finished his article that he was simply busting to submit it. Either way, I bet he wished he could turn back the clock once he saw the headline printed in black and white!

We have all been there - we all make mistakes. The trick is to allow yourself the best opportunity to spot any mistakes before a document leaves your hands.

Go for a walk, have a coffee, weed the garden, talk to the dog, salute the sun - it doesn't matter. Just create some space between you and your writing. You will come back to it with fresh eyes, and be able to edit so much more effectively. Amen.

By the way, where does Dot get this stuff from??!

Dot's Giggle Spot #5

Hmmm, Dot suspects that the author of this coupon might have been trying to be funny - but this can't be confirmed for sure...

Hee hee!!
This advert shows us why we should write, wait, re-read, and THEN use our copy.
You might know what you're trying to say, but sometimes it doesn't come across the way it was intended.
Try to imagine you are the target audience when you re-read your work. Sometimes it will stand up to your scrutiny, and sometimes it might just make you giggle...

Dot's Giggle Spot #4

Dot likes a good laugh, as do most people in this world. It is something worth remembering when trying to come up with a new catch phrase, headline, or in this case - business name.
Take a look:

I think its hard not to at least smile, but then with two young boys I am often reduced to this kind of humour...

While it might be a little too much for some, I think this picture illustrates the point that a little bit of humour can go a looooonng way.

Dot's Giggle Spot #1

Dot the Ladybird likes to have a giggle from time to time, and nothing makes her laugh more than funny signs from all around the world.

Much like Dot, I also like to have a giggle at this kind of thing - check out this sign...

Hee hee (snort!) - I love it!

However, this sign does highlight the importance of proof reading our writing from an unsuspecting reader's point of view. Its worth making sure that our message is clear and not at risk of being misunderstood! Well, not unless that is your intention.

Dot's Giggle Spot will be a regular feature here at The Letterbug, so make sure you pop in again soon.
